This week, I’m back in my favorite city, so I wanted to share a photo that might help explain why I can’t stay away from Barcelona.
This is the inscription at the foot of the Font de Canaletes, a fancy fountain at the top of Las Ramblas, the most famous street in Barcelona. It’s not just pretty; it also has supposed magical powers. Here’s my rough translation of it:
“If you drink the water
From the Fountain of Canaletes
You will always be
In love with Barcelona.
And no matter how far you go,
You’ll always return.”
You might be wondering – did I drink from the Font de Canaletes? Well, I’m back in Barcelona, aren’t I?

I’ve never noticed that inscription before! It’s funny, Rome actually has a similar legend about its Fontana di Trevi, if you throw a coin in it’s supposed to mean you’ll return.
It’s on the ground and not very conspicuous. I didn’t even realize which fountain it was for a long time! I thought it was a different, bigger one.
Wow, you are brave. I sat there with my friend in the evening watching the fountain. Had no clue that there was a tile that had an inscription. Boy, do I feel dumb now. I have thrown the coin at the Trevi fountain that Kat mentioned and I’m sure that I will be back in Italy at some point. I know that I will make it to Barcelona but I will probably need a few beers or wine in order for me to consider drinking from the fountain
You know, it may not be the fountain you’re thinking of. There are a couple bigger, fancier fountains on the Ramblas, and this is a smaller one that’s also a lamppost. I expected something bigger. It’s got drinking fountain spouts, so I think it’s probably not too terrible to drink from it.
Actually, I’ll just have to go dig up a photo of the whole fountain.
Ha Ha! Thank goodness it wasn’t the one I was thinking of. I would worry if people were “going to the bathroom” in the fountain late at night when people drink too much.
Oh no, I don’t think it’s that one! Hahaha I’d be afraid to drink out of that one too!

I’ll be in BCN for a couple of days in March and hopefully I’ll still like it, it’s been 6 years since the last time I’ve been in Barcelona. Can not wait! You think it’ll be nice and sunny beginning of March?
I hope so! I remember going to the beach for the first time in March last year. It was too cold for me to swim, but it was definitely sunny.

I’m going to have to post a big picture of the Font de Canaletes so everyone knows which fountain it is. It’s not the one most people expect it to be (it sure wasn’t the one I was imagining).
